“The plot of “Lusha” combines realities that are infinitely far apart: Chesterton's, Carroll's Cambridge - and the Gulag. These two worlds interlock in the fate of the protagonists - Hannah, a British Jewess, wife of British communist Christopher, her daughter Alice (aka Tatiana) and granddaughter Lusha - and the engine of this interlock is the story of Carroll's Alice. Hannah and Christopher, believing in the utopian Soviet facade, travel to the USSR. There they are predictably repressed, and the world in which Hannah and her descendants live becomes a Looking Glass, the unreal underside of the normal life they left behind.”
